Seeley W. Mudd Library
1970s

Seeley W. Mudd Library, joined to Honnold Library by a pedestrian bridge, was dedicated in September 1970. Col. Seeley Wintersmith Mudd was born in Missouri in 1861 and worked as a mining engineer in Leadville, Colorado, later becoming a consulting engineer in Los Angeles. In 1914 Mr. Mudd became a trustee of Pomona College. In World War I, Mr. Mudd joined the Engineer Officers Reserve Corps, and was promoted to the rank of Colonel. It was Col. Mudd who interested his friend and fellow engineer Mr. Honnold in becoming a Claremont Colleges trustee, and both served as members of the first board of directors of the Claremont Colleges when the institution was incorporated in 1925. He served only briefly, dying suddenly in 1926. Col. Mudd and his family, especially his sons Harvey S. Mudd and Seeley G. Mudd, were generous benefactors to the Claremont Colleges and to other colleges. Dr. Seeley G. Mudd was the principal individual donor for the library, which was designed by architects Flewelling and Moody of Los Angeles, and asked that it be named the Seeley Wintersmith Mudd Memorial Library in honor of his father.
