Using Your Laptop in Honnold/Mudd Library
Users with laptop computers suitably configured for network access can now plug into ports available for internet connectivity throughout Honnold/Mudd Library. Most are concentrated in the New Library (3rd Floor) Wings and on each of the bridge levels. There are others scattered throughout the buildings.FIRST. What you must bring with you and have installed on your computer:
Please note that presently and until we have a better gauge on usage of this service only the top left-hand port in the faceplates are active.
- Laptop computer (Mac or PC) with an ETHERNET CARD with appropriate connectors if needed.
- TCP/IP applications like a web browser, POP mail client, etc.
- RJ45 patch cord for the connection from your computer to the wall jack.
SECOND. What you must do once you're physically connected to a faceplate:
- Windows 95 Users:
- Go into the Control Panel and then Network.
- Look at the installed network components and see if you have TCP/IP installed. If so, then skip to step 4. If not, continue to step 3.
- Click on Add, then Protocol, then Microsoft, then TCP/IP. This will install the TCP/IP Protocol.
- Double click on TCP/IP to get its Properties.
- Under TCP/IP properties, there are six tabs. Click on the tab called IP Address.
- Choose Obtain IP Address Automatically. Now click on OK to accept the changes.
- Close the Control Panel and restart your computer.
- Windows 3.11 Users:
We need to work with users with Windows 3.11 individually because there is more involved in setting up network connectivity for them. You will have to change settings like the IP address and gateway (router) address, etc. so packets can find their way out of and into Honnold/Mudd.
- Mac Users:
- Be sure that you are running at least MacOS 7.5.3 and Open Transport (MACTCP won't work); you can download Open Transport 1.1.1. from Apple's WebSite.
- In your TCP/IP control panel, specify Connect via Ethernet and Configure Using DHCP Server.
- If you want to network with other campus Macintoshes, set your Appletalk control panel to Connect via Ethernet, and select network resources in the Chooser.
THIRD. What you can do now:
Jusuf Wiriadinata at extension 18866 is the primary contact for assistance with accessing the network with your laptop.
- Network applications like Web browsing, reading your email or accessing many library resources are available to you with an internet connection. Blais, our online catalog, is searchable on the web . Also, many other electronic resources and services can be accessed through the web.
