Libraries Services & Collections

The Libraries

Two libraries comprise the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges. Honnold/ Mudd Library, the larger library, holds collections in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College specializes in the humanities and fine arts. Each of the libraries has individual and group study spaces, and each provides network connections, including wireless connectivity, for students who bring laptops.

Learning, teaching, & research

The Libraries are partners with The Claremont Colleges in learning, teaching, and research. Reference staff provide assistance with locating and using both traditional and electronic information sources. One of the major activities of the Libraries is teaching students how to find, evaluate, and effectively use information. Tours, workshops, and instruction for classes and other groups, as well as individual appointments for instruction and research assistance, may be scheduled in each of the libraries. Most of the Libraries' classes and workshops are held in the Keck Learning Room, the Libraries' smart, hands-on teaching facility, located in Honnold/Mudd Library. All library facilities are open to students, faculty, and staff of all The Claremont Colleges.

Electronic resources

The Libraries' large collection of electronic resources provides ready access to a wide variety of bibliographic, full-text and multimedia information. From the Libraries web site, it is possible to search Blais, the online catalog, or any of hundreds of databases including services such as Lexis-Nexis Academic and ISI Web of Science. Other resources include electronic books and journals, such as the ACM Digital Library and Congressional Quarterly Library. The Claremont Colleges Digital Library (CCDL) provides access to a growing number of digital collections from The Colleges as well as from the Libraries' Special Collections. Digital collections such as Early English Books Online and North American Women's Letters & Diaries make available thousands of additional primary source materials. Most of these resources are accessible to students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges in their dorms, labs, offices and homes, as well as in the Libraries.

Collections

The Libraries' resources include some 2.5 million volumes. The Libraries also have extensive holdings of journals, magazines and newspapers: currently we provide online electronic access to articles in over 12,000 journals, and we receive more than 4,000 titles in paper. Honnold/Mudd Library is a depository for publications issued by the United States government, and has extensive holdings of publications from the State of California, Great Britain, the United Nations, and other international agencies. The Asian Studies Collection at Honnold/Mudd has a large collection of Asian language materials. The Libraries also hold extensive special collections. You can get a copy of A Guide to Special Collections at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges in Special Collections at Honnold/Mudd Library or at Denison Library. Use Blais, the catalog, to search for materials held by the Libraries.

Interlibrary loan

The Libraries offer Interlibrary Loan service and maintain partnerships which provide access to books, articles, and other materials not held in our collections. These partnerships include LINK+ and the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago.

Affiliated libraries

Students, faculty, and staff also have access to several nearby affiliated libraries, including the George C. Stone Center for Children's Books, a division of Claremont Graduate University's Center for Developmental Studies in Education; the botanical and horticultural library of the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden; and the library at the Claremont School of Theology.
